Tequin (Gatifloxacin) is an antibiotic used to treat acute sinus infections,
pneumonia, complications of chronic bronchitis, kidney and urinary tract infections,
and gonorrhea. Gatifloxacin is in a class of popular antibiotics called fluoroquinolone.
Fluoroquinolone antibiotics are highly potent. At one time they were considered
relatively safe but have since become potentially troublesome with irreversible
side effects. Other antibiotics in the same class include ciprofloxacin (Cipro)
and levofloxacin (Levaquin) among others.
Tequin has been recently linked to dangerous and potentially fatal side effects
including hypergylcemia (high blood sugar), hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and
diabetic ketoacidosis (severe out of control blood sugar) leading to diabetic
coma, severe liver damage, and death. Tequin has also been shown to cause side
effects such as fatal allergic reactions, irregular heartbeats, fainting, muscle
damage, dangerous diarrhea, cardiovascular problems, kidney disease and renal
insufficiency, seizures and psychosis.
On March 1, 2006, a new study published in The New England Journal of Medicine
revealed that Tequin antibiotic causes potentially life-threatening risks. Researcher
found that people taking Tequin were four times more likely to develop low-blood
sugar and 17 times more likely to develop high-blood sugar (hyperglycemia) in
comparison to similar antibiotics. In addition, the study found that Tequin
antibiotic risks are even greater for people with diabetes, a condition characterized
by poor blood glucose control.
Due to these life threatening Tequin side effects, Bristol-Myers Squibb stopped
marketing and manufacturing Tequin. However, the remaining stock is still available.
